Edinburgh Airport Struggles In The Snow

Jan 9, 07:04 PM

Most airports across the UK have had a rough time of it recently, and this has certainly been true of Edinburgh Airport in Scotland. In the deluge of snow the UK coped with just before Christmas, Edinburgh Airport was closed for a short time as the downfall led to blocked runways and other areas. Once it was cleared it reopened on the 23rd December.

But if we thought that was the worst of the winter over with nice and early, we hadn’t bargained on the second deluge of snow that started coming down to bring in the New Year. So far January has proved to be white, cold and icy, and this has led to many more planes being grounded and flights delayed.

While those in charge at Edinburgh Airport are doing all they can to keep things moving as much as possible, safety is clearly of paramount concern. The airport was open as of 11.18am on Friday 8th January, but visitors to their website were being warned to expect delays and possibly cancellations to their flights. Even if Edinburgh was operating as normal it is likely that destination airport would be affected by the snow as well, so there is every chance that the problems will continue for quite some time yet.

A quick glance at the latest flight information for the 8th January showed that of the first twelve flights listed five of them had been cancelled. Clearly there is a fair chance you may be unlucky if you are trying to go anywhere while the bad weather is continuing.

Your best bet is to check with Edinburgh Airport before you travel if you are intending to fly from there over the next few days. Check with the airline you are travelling with as well, to see whether they have any information on whether your flight from Edinburgh (or indeed to the airport) is likely to occur.

If you are heading there make sure you give yourself more time than usually needed to reach the airport, and keep an eye on local weather conditions as well. The more prepared you can be the better.

There is no doubt this is one of the worst winters we have seen in a long time. Hopefully any flight plans you have made will not be affected, but be prepared to make changes and perhaps even cancel your plans altogether.
