Where could you fly to if you caught a plane from Edinburgh Airport?
You’ll have plenty of great destinations to choose from if you decide to choose Edinburgh Airport as your means to fly out of Scotland and into another country.
There are lots of perennial favourites among the destinations here, including Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and many more besides. You can also fly to America if you wish – New York is just one plane ride away. And if Canada beckons you, a plane will take you all the way to Toronto as well.
In addition to all the popular destinations for summer holidays, you will also find many world cities on the list. These are popular with business people who have meetings to go to in those locations. So you can see that Edinburgh Airport really does cater for everyone.
What are some of the main features of Edinburgh Airport?
Unlike some huge airports like Heathrow, Edinburgh has just the one terminal. If you are used to using much bigger airports you will be pleasantly surprised by how small and welcoming Edinburgh is. This is particularly true when you consider that the airport ushers through millions of people every single year.
The terminal itself is designed in an L shape. The ground floor has two arrivals areas – one for UK arrivals and one for international flights. You will also find the check in area on this floor along with the baggage reclaim part of the airport.
You will only see the first floor of the airport if you are travelling to or from the airport yourself. This is because the departure gates are all up here, as well as the main waiting area where you will go when waiting for your flight number to be called.
Of course regardless of whether you are collecting someone from the airport or simply waiting for your own flight to leave, you might well get a bit peckish. Not to worry though, because there are several places you can sit and relax with a coffee, a snack or something a bit more substantial.
There are other facilities at the airport too of course, including a dedicated play area for those families flying out of Edinburgh Airport with their young children. All in all despite the fact there is only one terminal, Edinburgh does not leave much out for any of its visitors.
A look at the history of Edinburgh Airport
Edinburgh Airport saw its first flight take off from the runway in 1947. It’s been all go since then of course, expanding gradually until today, where it is able to easily cope with nine million passengers on an annual basis.
But back before Edinburgh Airport itself was even thought of, the land was occupied by the Turnhouse Aerodrome. In fact this was used throughout the First World War, so it has quite a history attached to it.
Even though the airport opened back in 1947, it only catered for flights in the UK to begin with. In fact that didn’t change until the 1980s, when the first few European destinations were added to the list. Since then of course many international destinations were introduced as well, making Edinburgh Airport into the competitive and very busy airport it is today.
In conclusion
If you have been to Edinburgh Airport before, you will know what a nice airport it really is. It has everything you could need, both before your flight and after you have landed, and with plans to expand its services in the future there is every chance that the airport will get better still.
But while Edinburgh Airport has just one terminal now, that could change as the years press on. It is thought that by the year 2020 there may be another terminal freshly installed at the airport. And needless to say this will bring with it the opportunity to cater for more passengers with each year that goes by.
At the moment though all this is long in the future. If you travel from Edinburgh Airport today you will find that it is a pleasant experience that reminds you of how flying should be. Enjoy the time you have there and look forward to returning as well!
